Gynaecological cancers, which affect the reproductive organs of women, include cancers of the cervix, uterus, ovaries, vulva, and vagina. These cancers are among the most common types affecting women worldwide. While no cancer can be entirely prevented, there are several strategies that can reduce the risk or help detect it early, increasing the chances of successful treatment.
Mr Jafaru Abu, an expert in gynaecological health, shares some critical insights on how women can take proactive steps in reducing their risk.
1. Regular screenings and cervical smears One of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer is through regular screenings. Pap smears and HPV tests help detect abnormal cells and early-stage infections that could potentially lead to cancer. Early intervention can often prevent cervical cancer altogether.
2. HPV vaccination Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a leading cause of cervical cancer. Vaccinating against HPV can significantly reduce the risk of developing cervical and other HPV-related cancers. The vaccine is recommended for young girls and boys before they become sexually active, but it can also benefit women up to age 45.
3. Lifestyle changes Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to reducing cancer risk. Mr Jafaru Abu advises adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, staying physically active, and avoiding smoking. Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, which can lower the risk of uterine and ovarian cancers.
4. Genetic counselling and family history If there is a family history of gynaecological cancers, genetic counselling may be beneficial. Inherited gene mutations, such as those linked to ovarian and breast cancer, can increase risk. Knowing your family history can empower women to make informed decisions about their health, including regular screenings or preventive surgeries.
Mr Jafaru Abu says “While some risk factors are beyond control, taking proactive measures like these can significantly reduce the risk of gynaecological cancers”.
